Does anyone have experience with either of these as an O/O? Which version(s) would you recommend for a new O/O, own authority, pulling 3-car trailer?
May happiness come on secret winds and surround you forever in the ways of beauty...
I used Quickbooks for 7 years running a small business, not trucking related. It does everything an accounting package needs to do, but it assumes that YOU have the knowlege how to set up the accounts. The first year I hired an accountant to do the taxes, and subsequent years I did it myself after learning from her how to do it.
I have not been an owner/op, but I did run a business. And people starting out in most businesses always hear the advice to get an accountant. In trucking, It would be to get an accountant familiar with trucking and trucking tax issues. In addition, they should be willing to work with you on the book keeping, so that you can create data out in the field that they can use without having to manipulate first. Most accountants will have a favorite accounting package, maybe even Quickbooks, and they will want you to use that. Remember that it is really two things you are hoping this software will do for you .... 1) let you know how much profit (or loss) you are making and 2) how much in taxes do i pay ....
A good accountant is better at answering these questions than a computer program written to scarf profits off of unwary truck drivers. But hey, maybe some of the programs out there are really good? I don't know personally but Truckers helper did not impress me much when I downloaded and tried the demo. Unfortunately, if you want software designed for an owner operator, the choices are few. OOIDA has links to a few other ones on their LINKS page, have you looked at them? Seems that OOIDA should WRITE this software and give it to the members, that would be something worth paying the dues for.
But a link to truckers helper (and several others) is what they give. Download and try the DEMO, you have nothing to lose that way.
Try everything out there with a demo, and also post your question in the owner operators and tax forums here too ... this electronics forum doesn't get much traffic, but there are lots of owner/op in the owner/op forum, many of whom have probably tried a half dozen software packages.Good luck in your search.
